After it downloads

Two minutes, once. Here's exactly what you'll see.

1

Drag Cleaning Mode onto the Applications folder

Open CleaningMode.dmg from your Downloads folder. In the window that appears, drag the Cleaning Mode icon onto the Applications folder.

2
Don't skip this step

Open Cleaning Mode from Applications

Dragging it in only installs it. Go to your Applications folder and double-click Cleaning Mode to start it. It walks you through the rest.

Or press ⌘ Space, type Cleaning Mode and press Return. It's in Launchpad too. If macOS asks whether you want to open an app downloaded from the internet, click Open.

3

Sign in or create your free account

Cleaning Mode's setup guide opens a secure sign-in window. Create an account with your email, or continue with Google.

4

Allow Accessibility in System Settings

Cleaning Mode needs this to lock the keyboard and trackpad. The guide takes you to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility: switch Cleaning Mode on, then come back. You only do this once.

5

You're all set: find the keyboard icon in the menu bar

Cleaning Mode lives in the menu bar at the top-right of your screen, not in the Dock. Click the keyboard icon and choose Start Cleaning Mode.

The same menu has Manage Account…, which opens your account page.

6

Clean, then type “open”

The screen goes black and nothing you press or touch does anything. Wipe away. When you're done, type open on the keyboard to get your Mac back.
